Confirmation of Payee

Now live - extra protection for your payments

Confirmation of Payee is a security feature designed to add an extra layer of protection against fraud, scams, and accidental payments. It is an initiative of Australian Payments Plus, the same organisation that also provides trusted payment services like BPAY ®, Osko ®, EFTPOS ®, PayID ® and PayTo ®.

Confirmation of Payee is now available for outbound payments through the BankVic app and Internet Banking.

You can start using it today, and we’ll continue to provide support resources, tutorials, and FAQs to help you get the most out of this new feature.

How it works

Before a payment is made, the service verifies whether the account details you’ve entered, such as the account name, BSB, and account number match the information held by the recipient’s bank.

The outcome of this match will be displayed, helping you confirm that you’re paying the correct person or business before proceeding with the transaction.

Match outcomes

  • Match

The details you've entered match the bank records of the intended recipient.

  • Close match

The details you've entered closely match the bank records of the intended recipient.

  • No match

The details you've entered do not match the bank records of the intended recipient.

  • Error

The service could not confirm if the account details you've entered match.

Confirmation of Payee FAQ's

  • Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that adds a layer of protection for payments to a BSB and account number. It checks the account name, BSB and account number you’ve entered against the details held by the recipient’s bank and lets you know whether it’s a match. This can help you make informed decisions before you make a payment, reducing the risk of scams and mistaken payments.

Confirmation of Payee is part of Australia’s domestic payments services including eftpos®, BPAY® , Osko®, PayID® and PayTo®.

  • You don’t need to do anything. Confirmation of Payee will be made available in your internet banking and the BankVic app. When you make a payment to a BSB and account number, or edit a payee’s BSB, account number or account name, you will be given the match result before you make a payment.

  • When you make a payment to a BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee checks the details you enter against the account name, BSB and account number held by the recipient’s bank and gives you a match outcome. That helps you decide what you want to do next – and gives you more confidence that the money you’re paying is going where you intend it to.

  • If you are receiving money into a personal account, the person who’s paying you will be shown the account name only if the name they have entered is a match or a close match. If any of these details are incorrect, the name will not be shown to protect your privacy.

  • Match: means the name and account details you entered are correct and match the person or business you’re trying to pay.

Close match: means the details are similar, but not exactly the same, it might be a small spelling difference or a slightly different name.

No match: means the details don’t match the account at all, and you may be sending money to the wrong person.

Error: means the service could not confirm the account details you entered match.

  • Yes. Confirmation of Payee will never stop you from completing a payment. We encourage you to be scam aware and always take steps to make sure you know who you are paying, as scams or mistaken payments may be difficult to retrieve.

  • To make sure you get paid smoothly and without delays, share your full account details, that means your account name, BSB, and account number. This is especially important for those accounts that use a different trading name (trading as).

You can find your account details:

    • In BankVic app, by clicking on your account, then the Settings icon at the top.
    • In internet banking, by clicking Accounts, then BSB Number Information.
  • Names with special characters, like apostrophes (‘), will still match without being entered. For example, enter “O’Brien” as “O Brien” or “Obrien”. Or an account name with an ampersand (&) such as Smith & Jones” will still match if you enter it as “Smith Jones”.

  • If the name you’re entering exceeds the character limit in internet banking or the BankVic App, you will need to check with the payee to confirm that the account details your’re sending money to are correct.

  • A mistaken payment happens when money is sent to the wrong person or account, often due to entering incorrect details like the account number or account name. These types of errors can be hard to reverse and may result in lost funds.

Confirmation of Payee helps reduce the risk of mistaken payments by checking that the account details you enter match the information held by the recipient’s bank. This gives you greater confidence that your payment is going where you intend it to.

  • Eligible customers may request to be opted-out of the Confirmation of Payee service. This means your account name and match outcome will not be displayed to payers and could impact the likelihood of the payer proceeding with the payment. If you need further information please call our Contact Centre on 13 63 73 Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

  • If your name is not appearing correctly in the Confirmation of Payee service, you'll need to update the name on your BankVic account. Please call our Contact Centre on 13 63 73 between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and we’ll assist you with the update.
